At DGH, we use practical and proven methods to achieve airtightness, thermal efficiency, and long-lasting, waterproof results for durable outcomes.

Our team is committed to providing you with high-performance design solutions without compromising your building's character. Using our integrated design approach, we can develop options to balance thermal properties of the envelope with other building systems that can also impact lifecycle costs. Our envelope specialists have access to a trusted multi-disciplinary team of engineers who can develop additional solutions to increase the life and improve the maintainability of your building.

Our building designers are experienced in design using good building practices in a variety of climates, including for northern facilities. Freeze/Thaw cycles and drying seasons can impact design options. If not accounted for, local weather can significantly shorten the life of building envelope components, with knock-on effects for the interior of the building as well as the health of its occupants.

By prioritizing the future maintenance required, replacement costs and durability of the materials we incorporate, our clients are able to rely on cost-effective, dependable, and time-tested solutions.

We offer a variety of services. We provide single-service solutions, as well as integrated multi-disciplinary design solutions for your project needs.

Condition Assessments

Many building envelope materials can last a lifetime with the appropriate upkeep. If you are not the original owner of the building or you are seeing signs of premature wear and tear in exterior areas, we can help you avoid a mid-lifecycle crisis. Our team is prepared to investigate areas that are hidden or difficult to access to determine the extent of any damage, assess the risk of the damage to your building's overall condition over time, and rate the remaining service life of building envelope elements. DGH has a robust safety program and experience using a number of techniques for working at heights and in confined spaces. We can also coordinate with specialists to use aerial drones and imaging technology to gather data on difficult to access locations, limiting the need for expensive scaffolding, lifts, and destructive testing.

Heritage Restoration/Remediation

Buildings play an important part in local culture and heritage. Construction, appearance, and function can all add to a building's unifying role in a community. DGH has experience in heritage restoration and remediation of building exteriors constructed over the past century. We can work with restoration contractors to protect heritage elements of your building. Our experience includes masonry repair for Tyndall stone facades, window replacement and remediation to ensure new windows match the original building appearance, and protection of century-old tin flashing material and cornices during roof replacements.

Forensic Investigation

Investigation is necessary when a building begins to experience symptoms of envelope failure. Problematic envelope detailing makes itself known through a multitude of symptoms, including mold growth, water leaks, foggy windows, frost buildup, efflorescence, deterioration, and many others. Forensic investigation incorporates our professional experience and frequently tested procedures to determine root causes of the symptoms. Our team can implement technical investigation procedures such as thermographic scans, air tightness testing, water leakage testing, moisture scanning, hammer sounding, as well as simple visual reviews.

Design

As a multidisciplinary design firm, Building Envelope Design is an important part of many projects that come out our doors. Our designers work together to provide practical design solutions with Structural, Electrical, Building Code, Energy Modeling, Mechanical, & Architectural design teams.

Building Envelope Construction Phase Consulting

DGH offers a flexible solution to Building Envelope Consulting, with the opportunity to work alongside a trusted team to reach your project outcomes. We offer drawing reviews, onsite reviews of installations, and troubleshooting for installation and design issues. We work with our clients to identify a plan specific to your project needs and budget.

Building Envelope Commissioning (BECx)

Building Envelope Commissioning provides owners with an additional level of assurance that a project meets their requirements. Effective commissioning should begin during the design stage and continue through document reviews of shop drawings and project change documents such as RFIs, Change Orders, and Site Instructions. Not only does commissioning verify performance following construction, it can also provide an additional level of review to avoid costly mistakes and schedule delays. We offer full construction phase services to projects requiring fenestration testing, visual reviews, quality assurance testing, and scans of completed installations. BECx project close-out documentation and testing can also be provided as part of this service. We can provide BECx as a single service, as a part of a commissioning team for all building systems.
